Comprehensive eye exams are an important part of maintaining great vision and eye health for the entire family.

During your eye exam, your eye doctor will check for any refractive errors or visual skill deficiencies that may hinder development or learning, and diagnose, manage, and treat eye diseases and conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration that can cause severe vision loss in adults.

Many of these sight-robbing conditions show little to no symptoms until they’ve already caused learning difficulties, significant damage to the eye, and/or irreversible vision loss. Routine eye exams ensure early diagnosis and treatment of these and other conditions.

What to Expect From Your Eye Exam

    We'll provide you with an updated prescription so that you can see clearly. Some people require a new prescription every year, whereas others only need a new prescription every 2-3 years.

Comprehensive Eye Exams FAQs

Is a comprehensive eye exam the same as a vision screening?

No. Vision screenings like the one performed for children in school or at optical-only stores only check for 20/20 vision. They do not check for the presence of sight-threatening eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or cataracts. They also do not check for visual skill deficiencies such as problems with visual tracking or processing. Comprehensive eye exams are more thorough and use advanced equipment to evaluate your vision and eye health.

How often should I get an eye exam?

Eye doctors usually recommend that you come in for a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. This ensures that your glasses or contact lens prescription stays up to date and that signs and symptoms of developing eye conditions are caught early before they cause lasting damage.

When should I bring my child in for their first comprehensive eye exam?

A child’s first eye exam should take place at age 6 months. It’s important not to delay eye exams for young infants and children as some early eye problems can affect vision for life. Detecting vision problems early can keep a minor issue from becoming something serious (and more challenging to treat).

Great eye doc (Carole Schulte) who listened to you. Had a prior bad experience elsewhere where I co... uldn’t see l the best and prescribed the wrong prescription & dr wouldn’t change it. So I waited a year and went here. She helped me get back to seeing 20/20. Staff is nice as well.

Seeing negative reviews for this place on some websites and maps made me a little weary but I honest... ly don’t know what those people had problems with, this was easily the best experience I’d ever had with getting my eyes tested and picking out glasses. The whole staff was incredibly nice and helpful, never had to wait more than a few minutes during any parts of the process, from picking out frames to finding the right lens type. Whole process just clicked so well, I was in and out quickly and very satisfied. They also had my contacts and frames ready for pickup just a week after coming in. Best experience I could’ve hoped for.

Dr. Carol Schulte Is the best eye doctor I’ve ever been to and I’ve been wearing glasses since I... was 3. She’s very patient, knowledgeable and thorough. This last Saturday was my 1st time coming to Alvernon Optical. I came here because I followed Dr. C... arol Schulte who I used to see at a different organization. Dr. Schulte Is a wonderful physician who is consistently very thorough and personable. She took time to go over the involved anatomy with my problem, and make great recommendations. Dina, the Optician, was the highlight of my visit there. She also is very personable, has a wonderful warm personality, and was very professional and thorough. Carol Schulte is amazing! She explained everything very thoroughly and took the time out to show me ... diagrams and models of the eye to explain my eye health. She also asked if I had any questions and waited patiently while I thought of some and I felt very heard. Never have I had that at an exam, usually I'm rushed out right away.
